DL: "Chic-style"

District Leader Despain: Reporting :)

Wasn’t that fun? Did you ever expect me to say that? Want to hear it again? Just kidding – but it’s true! I’ve been called to serve as District Leader over District B in the Extended Zone of the Utah Salt Lake City Temple Square Mission. *Insert all forms of excitement here*

Last Saturday we went to the Himalayan Kitchen for some delicious Nepali food. It was amazing! I missed Sister Khadgi so much – she would have loved it. I miss eating with my hands :) We also went to the Gigal Gardens, a bizarre little garden that….you just have to Google because I don’t know how to describe it!
Miracle of the week: I passed off in Spanish!!!

We had Transfer Conference Monday morning! Ahhh! It’s so nerve-wracking. As you already know, I’m now a DL, I moved three doors down (no, not the band), my schedule is exactly the same & my new companion is Sister Douglas from Georgia. It’s a fairly large-ish change. I’ve never been Senior Companion. I’ve never been DL. I haven’t moved in 5 transfers [7.5 months] and Sister Douglas is actually our wheelchair Sister! As I let that sink in over the hours of the day I became apprehensive as to my capabilities regarding the whole situation. I didn’t think I had the patience, charity, humility or sense/awesomeness to be able to pull this off. Just a few days prior I remember telling S. Nelson, “I feel like if nothing changes – I’m not being challenged! And these two transfers with you have been so easily amazing that I think I need a challenge!” Well…there you have it. Challenge: Granted.

Sister Nelson & I parted ways Wednesday morning and I instantly missed her with all my heart. That day was straight up difficult. The first lady we took around wouldn’t look at Sister Douglas & I was unkindly close to slapping her proud little face off. That’s not Christ like though, so I didn’t. The second tour we took was great though. A couple from Colorado Springs, here for a family visit. We discovered that the wife was baptized but hadn’t been to church for 15+ years – the husband was very interested in learning more & loved Temple Square. After a completely un-pushy triple invite (I’m serious) they agreed to have missionaries visit them! We get to teach them :)

CHRIS GOT BAPTIZED ON THURSDAY!!!! He’s going to send us pictures :)
DANNY IS ON DATE FOR BAPTISM!!!! He lives in Taylorsville – so we totally get to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took my first Spanish tour as an official Spanish Sister, on Friday! Gratefully she was a very patient 21-year old member who is working on her mission papers! This was her first time to Temple Square & she loved just being here. She said if she could go anywhere on her mission – it would be Temple Square. She gave us two potentials!

Other than Chris & Danny there isn’t much to report investigator-wise. Over transfers things get crazy so we don’t set appointments for a few days. I kept 11 of our investigators and gave the rest to Sister Nelson; she has more time to take care of them now. I can’t wait to hear about Brittany’s baptism!

Sister Douglas is picking up GS pretty quickly! I did GS training Thursday night & apparently was hilarious enough to keep everyone’s attention! S. Douglas & I talk a lot, which is key to the beginning of a companionship. I love being a DL (so far) and I’m excited for the no doubt, very interesting transfer ahead of us!
I know God answers our prayers. I know that He loves us & gives us challenges to strengthen us. I know that with Him all things are possible. I know that when you pray for an abundance of love for a seemingly difficult situation – He will bless you with that which you need. The church is so true.

Love you all,

Sister Despain Jr.

Mexico, Deep Thinkers and 2012

Mardhaba, kyfek? (Arabic: Hi, how are you?)

Grandma & Grandpa Despain brought me a referral! I am so excited to make this call.

These two beautiful women from Mexico came to Temple Square for vacation. We ran into them in the Tabernacle & ended up taking them around the Square! In the beginning another guest distracted me with a question & when I turned around the mother & daughter were smiling, “¿Hablas español?” My wonderful companion, Sister Nelson loves telling everyone that I speak Spanish :) I’m actually really grateful for her. She helps us see a lot of miracles, many of which have been in Spanish. I invited them at the Temple display – the mother kindly rejected the offer saying, “I’m not gonna change my religion – forget about it!” Amazingly enough, it was the kindest rejection I’ve ever gotten! We parted ways. Five minutes later, we see the daughter filling out a card with Sister Penafiel! We asked her about it later. Apparently she struck up a conversation, thought the lady was a member & invited her for potentials! Once it came out that she wasn’t a member, she invited for her own sake & was readily accepted. Sister Nelson was more upset than I was :)

We ran into a deep thinker this week. His name is Brendon & he’s from Pennsylvania. This experience was a great testimony builder that the Spirit really is what directs people to feel something. As we talked with him in the Tabernacle, we later referred to it as “we were having 3 different conversations & none of it made sense”. I’ll let your imagination take that one. I asked him, “Where do you find, or what brings you peace in life?” He thought about it & wasn’t exactly sure. It’s a favorite question as of late. He then turned it on us & asked. We replied with a brief explanation of the peace that comes with knowing of the plan that God has for all of His children. We continued our conversation at the Temple display & told him more about where we came from, why we’re here & where we’ll go after this life. He was amazed & I could really tell he wanted to know more. The Spirit was there, so I invited! He gladly accepted :) I love finding people that are so prepared and really searching for something.

The Lord has blessed us SO much these last two transfers! Because of our crazy GS schedule we only get study time once-ish a week. I know. How am I still alive?!? But we’d done our best & pray a lot and still manage to have miracles poured out upon us. The Lord loves each of us so much & wants the best for us. I know this.
Wednesday morning we took our second motorcoach as a companionship! We had 8 people from the Canary Islands, Germany, Vietnam & Singapore. FOUR of them referred! It’s such an amazing experience we have here at Temple Square to have such a variety of people to teach! I love it!

Brittany from Alabama went to church again this Sunday! She LOVED Relief Society & even felt prompted to share her story. She is in a very sad situation with an incredibly unsupportive family. She got a copy of the Book of Mormon and is already in love with it. The missionaries talked to her at church & said they would call her later in the week to set up a time to visit her. What about now??? We earnestly pray for the missionaries around the world that they will quickly get in touch with our precious investigators & effectively teach them. It’s SO important! Brittany accepted the commitment to be baptized :) She is so sweet & genuine – we love her so much!

Friday morning we had a revolutionary 7:30 Mission Meeting! We will now have one Sister carrying the Book of Mormon….and the other carrying the Bible!!! Did you just fall out of your seat? I would have, if I hadn’t been right there when the “trial” Sisters posed the idea to President. We are VERY excited. The Brethren have asked that we do this in an effort to more effectively present our beliefs. I bought a copy that afternoon & have had way too much fun going through & highlighting fantastically useful scriptures :)

Quote of the Week: “I believe the world is going to end in 2014. But the Bible says 2012.” “Where?” “…I don’t know – but people at church say that’s what it says!” No, Dianne has never read the Bible.
Time is going by WAY too fast! Loving EVERY minute :)

3-2-1 Best Week Ever!

PASSENGERS: FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS!

Discoveries of the week:
1. There’s nothing like having someone else cut & style your hair :)
2. My family is the #1 supportive missionary family in the world!
3. Accidently “running into” other Sisters for dinner makes me feel like a spy.
4. Mandarin motor coaches prevent AND cause mental breakdowns.
5. Finding out your investigator is on date for baptism is exhilarating!!!

This week has hereby been deemed the most productive/exciting/fast-flying week of my mish! We were insanely busy everyday & had a blast working hard. I thought I knew the extent of important text messages & phone calls before the mission – I had no idea :) We called John (South Carolina) on Sunday & he told us all about his baptism! He “feels great” and has never been happier. He had a stroke a number of years ago so his speech is slow – but it has improved since talking with us! We are so glad that both he & his son have been able to come closer to Christ through baptism.

Chris (Alabama) texted us back, letting us know that he went to church, found the missionaries, met with them twice and will be getting baptized MAY 26th!!!! WE ARE SO EXCITED FOR HIM!!!!! He wants to go on a mission. Genius.

Sherri (Indiana) replied to our email message to say that she is still meeting with the Sister missionaries and will be getting baptized JUNE 11th!!! Okay, now it’s starting to sound redundant :) That’s all for now but we have felt so blessed to keep in touch with these wonderful people who have been prepared throughout their lives for this next step. It’s so rewarding to be a part of it. I love being a missionary!!!

Calling home for Mothers’ Day was wonderful. Everyone is still as crazy as I left them :)

Brittany (Alabama) told us a few weeks ago that she would probably lose her phone the next day. So we didn’t try calling her for a while. But we’re glad we did – she went to church this past Sunday & the missionaries said they would give her a call! So we hope everything runs smoothly there. Her situation is sad & very tricky so we’re doing all we can to lift her spirits. She is so sweet & just wants to find happiness and peace…as cliché as that sounds.

On the Square we took around a precious daughter of God, whom we’ll call Sue – because I don’t remember her name. In the SVC she informed us that we would not be going to Hell – because we love Christ. It was amazing to witness a situation where someone can be saying one thing – but what you HEAR them saying is the complete opposite :) She was an unforgettable contact because everything she said, agreed with our beliefs & then she went back on it – 5 seconds later. Weird, I know. She spent her talking time kindly attacking us for beliefs that she agrees with…which is hard to explain via letter. One day I’ll tell the story in more detail. Sorry, that made no sense. Trust me – it’s story-worthy!

Thursday night I had 3 Spanish calls to make. No pressure. Mom sent me a very motivating postcard that day – in Spanish! So that helped me feel more confident in calling Fernando, Sandra & Joanna. They’re all doing great! I’ve really come to see the power of teaching in brief & powerful statements. Sister Oyarzabal (roommate AND Spanish language coordinator) told me we will be role playing a tour & then I’ll pass off. It wasn’t an option…I’m totally psyched :)

Every day the buildings stay, the people change & the Sisters are always on their ‘A game’.

There is nowhere else I’d rather be! I love serving on Temple Square :)

Love,

Sister Despain Jr

Bulgaria, Alabama & Nova Scotia... all in a day's work!

HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY!!!

Just so everyone knows, the amazing, the fantastic, the I-don’t-care-if-this-isn’t-in-my-comfort-zone-I’m-gonna-do-it-anyways Jennifer Despain…is the best mom ever :)

This week started off with a baptismal commitment agreed to by Chris who lives in Alabama! He is 19 and read the Book of Mormon in one night. Sunday night. He said, “Ya – it should probably only take me…5 hours to read it. I’ll have it finished by tomorrow.” *Insert slightly confused amazement on our end HERE* We called him back Tuesday and sure enough, he had finished it & share his thoughts with us! He said he really liked it and loved how it all just made sense. He said he had already prayed about it & was “sure it was true…how soon can I get baptized?” *GOLDEN* We called him back Thursday to hear about his impressions on the General Conference talks we sent him. He loves President Monson, “he speaks so well & everything he says…sounds good!” He especially likes the Plan of Salvation. He’s planning on going to church on Sunday so he can find the missionaries & let them know he wants to be taught & baptized!!! He asked again about going on a mission – we are so keeping in touch with him :)

This week’s cooking creation: Caramelized Pineapple Cake Cookies! Hereby deemed: DELICIOUS!

Motorcoach #1: That’s right, I took my first motorcoach! For those of you who don’t spend your Summer months traveling the world, a motorcoach is a huge bus that seats 60 people & stops at major sites throughout the country. One of those “major sites” happens to be my mission :) We took 35 travel-loving Senior citizens from Nova Scotia around the Square Tuesday morning. It was so fun! It took the group a full 5 min to get seated in the Tabernacle and as we started talking the organist decided that would be prime time to start practicing. Genius. I love the organ, it’s a wonderful instrument but I have to say –those who play it tend to have the worst timing ever. We said what we could & let them enjoy the music for a minute. We moved them from the Flag Pole to the Assembly Hall & took a few questions at the end. We got a referral! It’s amazing for a Senior/English motorcoach :) I really enjoyed it though because you have to keep things VERY simple. You say a sentence & switch – it was great!

I read Sis Deaver’s update a few weeks ago where she was talking about members here actually appreciating what we do. I couldn’t help but smile as I recalled all the moments that members have been amazingly rude to us :) After such an experience this week Sis Nelson said, “Wait…that was really rude – wasn’t it?” It’s kind of funny to see how accustomed you get to people being ridiculously awkward or rude because we get it every day! But hey, we don’t mind. Story of the week is actually about a Sister Missionary serving in the area. As she scheduled a tour with me she said, “We need someone who can tell them the truth – but do it nicely. (Later) Basically, we need someone who has done this before.” [Impatiently & condescendingly.] I told her we do this every day & we’ll get someone on it. We talked with the Sister who took the tour & she said, “She was CRAZY!” Hahahahahaha we meet such interesting people on the mission :)

Miracle! We got flagged down to take a tour from the Airport Shuttle at West Gate. I am SO glad that we did. Ivan is originally from Bulgaria but now lives in the Southern USA. He’s in his mid-20’s and was traveling because he got a free ticket! We took him to the Assembly Hall & proceeded to sit and talk with him for the next 45 minutes – one of the best discussions of my mission. He asked about our missions, what it entails, if we think that getting cancer is a punishment from God etc. In the end, he was very impressed by our dedication, our happiness & our willingness to talk with him. He has friends who go to church every Sunday but are “idiots every other day”. He followed up with, “But you seem like…completely decent people!” *Insert moment of bliss HERE* In that moment that he said that and we could tell he really understood what we stood for, I felt legitimately appreciated. It was the best feeling ever. We only had 10 minutes left before we had to get him back to the shuttle so we took him to see the Temple display. We invited him for missionaries because we knew this is what he’s been looking for! He took the route of trying to get in touch with them first – which is never effective. I was confused because I could tell he really wanted to say yes, but something was holding him back. That morning we had worked on brainstorming effective questions & re-inviting –so it came in handy. In the end he told us that his visa had run out & therefore couldn’t have anyone know his address! So we got what information we could, said we would call him in the mean time & sent him off on the shuttle!

This week was absolutely fantastic. We have our ups & downs with the work but having a solid companion makes a BIG difference. Sister Nelson is an amazing missionary and is always pushing me to do my best – even if it means her pushing the DIAL button for a Spanish phone call :) We’ve been together TEN weeks & we’re still getting along great – working hard!

This church is so true. God loves each of us so much. Review the standards of the church & make sure you’re not just settling for being better than the world. We have a potential in this life that I think very few realize. We only do this life once – give it your ALL!

Lots of love,

Sis A. Despain
